Celebrating Leith’s next generation of changemakers

Being part of a community means actively finding ways to support it. This week we have loved helping to shine a light on two remarkable young changemakers driving positive impact right on our doorstep in Edinburgh.

At just 11 years old, Edie Chaw and Tarek Hydara Estribio are transforming their community at Cables Wynd House in Leith. Supported by the team at YMCA Edinburgh, who operate from a community hub just around the corner from our own office, they are leading youth-led advocacy groups, presenting comprehensive housing reports to the City of Edinburgh Council, and championing local climate initiatives.

Their dedication is a powerful reminder that you don’t have to be an adult to drive real change. In fact, the success of these youth-led initiatives by YMCA Edinburgh was recently recognised on the global stage at the 2026 YMCA World Council in Toronto. Amazing job, Edie and Tarek!

Young people who want to make a difference are actively encouraged to get in touch to find out more about the Next Generation Youth Forum and other fantastic participation opportunities.

The organisation is also keen to hear from adults interested in volunteering as mentors, collaborating with young people around meaningful climate action in the local community, or supporting its wider life-changing work. Whether through mentoring, partnership, fundraising, or simply encouraging a young person to get involved, everyone has a role to play in empowering the next generation.
