Podcasts to PR: My experience

My name is Nilufer, and I’m beyond excited to join Feel Good Comms as an Account Executive. My work here will allow me to learn the ropes of PR- an industry I have had a longtime passion for. Any person dealing with the job market today doesn’t need to be told twice that an opportunity like this for a young professional doesn’t come around twice- which is why I’m exceptionally lucky to be arriving to the team here in Leith off the back of an incredible fortnight as a Podcast and Audio Storytelling Intern with The Guardian’s 2026 Positive Action scheme.

In my time there, I shadowed incredible journalists as they undertook their daily tasks, worked with a brilliant team of producers who could edit podcast episodes in the blink of an eye, and worked seamlessly altogether to consistently output great content for their audiences, of which I have been a long-term member.

Though my focus was on multimedia and podcasting, it was so intriguing to see the inside of a newsroom. Following a fortnight of ‘pinch-me’ moments as I undertook my first foray into journalism, I now enter a whole new world of press coverage and media sell-ins. I feel all the more prepared now that I know how the average day as a journalist works- from that initial morning briefing to an afternoon tea break from the busy and constantly bustling newsroom.

My work in podcasting was immensely enjoyable. Coming from a background in audio, focusing on hosting and editing in more chat-based shows, made the quick turnaround of journalistic podcasts a whole different, adrenaline-rushed ballpark. Something that I hugely admired across the Guardian’s whole slate of podcasts though, is their keen sense for the human element of any story. No matter what the story was, or the rounds it had made across the news cycle, the producers of the Today in Focus podcast where I was based and the wider department had an undeniable interest for the human voice of any story - consistently getting a personal, unique perspective on stories that had otherwise become one-tone or overdone. For example going out to communities to get local opinions on everything from the Clacton by-election to the new data centre approved in Brick Lane.

This incredible work, that I gained such admiration for in my short time there, will undoubtedly inform my work with the team here at Feel Good Comms. I have always respected agencies that platform the people behind their PR, and I have no doubt that my time here as a trainee will be led by this people-first mission statement.  This internship opened my eyes to what can create an engaging story with a compassionate, human voice at the centre. I hope to build on this alongside my previous volunteer experience in order to champion changemakers in the community and utilise my upcoming PR education to the greatest benefit. My time with Feel Good will give me the tools to deliver support to various excellent organisations, and I cannot wait to get stuck in during my time here and welcome these next steps with enthusiasm and undeniable excitement!
